Frank de Waele's Workshop in Barcelona

Roshi Frank De Waele serves as a spirit holder for the Zen Peacemakers Sangha in the Low Countries (The Netherlands and Belgium). He is a Dharma successor to Bernie Glassman Roshi, and Zen Master of the Zen Sangha in Ghent (Belgium). After the Zen koan study with his French Zen Master, Catherine Genno Pagès Roshi, Frank De Waele Sensei received Dharma transmission in 2005.

Frank then studied and worked for years with Bernie Glassman Roshi, whom he first met on the Bearing Witness Retreat in Auschwitz in 1996. After the street retreat in Cologne (1997), Frank began to work with Bernie in the development of local Peacemaker initiatives in Europe. He attended numerous training sessions and workshops with Roshi Bernie in the US, Europe and Israel, and spent several months in the Peacemaker Hub in Santa Barbara and then in Montague. He often traveled with Bernie and translated for him when he came to Europe.

As a Zen Peacemaker Circle Developer, Frank supported local Peacemaker projects, and he guided events in France, Poland, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands. He facilitated a ten-day meditative pilgrimage in Umbria (in the footsteps of Saint Francis) and Burgundy, and a dozen street retreats in Paris and Brussels.

Frank also participated in several training activities, such as an introductory session on Nonviolent Communication with Marshall Rosenberg; an intensive ‘Way of Council’ training session (listening circle) with Fleet Maull; clowning workshops with Mr. Yoowho (Moshe Cohen), and an applied training session on Sociocracy.

Frank is the head of the Zen Sangha, a Zen Buddhist lay community in Belgium, which is affiliated to the Zen Peacemaker Sangha. In this capacity, he is closely involved in interreligious dialogue at the local and national levels. Frank started a palliative-care group that every six weeks brings together volunteers working in palliative care.

He received Dharma transmission also from Bernie Roshi during the street retreat in April 2011 in New York and became his Dharma successor in the Zen Peacemakers Sangha.

Frank will be leading a workshop in Barcelona to explore the Zen Peacemaker’s mission (three tenants, core values and practices). The workshop will take place at Casa de Espiritualidad San Felipe Neri, seat of the Dana Paramita Zen Sangha in Barcelona.
